Hunt is an obvious candidate - but can we make the case in a short sharp and clear way that the public and even some journalists might understand? However good an example we have I think it needs to be explained on one side of A4 (one and a half lines spacing) and with no more than two or three lines of actual numbers.
It's all about impact!

I would like to nominate Jeremy Hunt for his misuse of statistics relating to weekend mortality to justify his implementation of the Junior Doctor contract / 7 day NHS. His use of such research amounts to a complete travesty. He wholeheartedly deserves the honour of the first award which should be named The Hunt Award. I am sure that Junior Doctors and medical colleagues will wholeheartedly support such a decision.

Dear All
I have been volunteered to try and develop the proposal that RadStats should offer an annual "'Bad Stats' Award".
What do you think?
So far the aims and characteristics of the award have not been defined, but I see them as including the following:
1. To highlight the importance of statistics in public discourse
2. To stress the importance of doing statistics 'widely and well'
3. To raise the profile of RadStats (maybe along with the RSS?)
4. To organise a fun, photographable ceremony at which BadStats awards will be presented to the winners. (As with the IgNoble Prize, this may be in absentia, but we can work around that.)
As you will realise, the intentions of this email are perfectly serious. However, please feel free to be humourous AND serious in your reply. In particular, what should the award be? (If not an 'Oscar', maybe a 'Claus'? Or even a 'Harold' in honour of Harold Wilson).
I welcome your advice on how and whether to proceed.
