A better test of whether design theory literature is a mess is to test whether there is ANY design research literature containing epistemologically sound design theory. If not, then it is safe to regard the current design research literature as a mess.
Hi Terry,
I realize that a lot of people probably don’t want to look at the research related to A Theory of Design Thinking. But to answer your challenge I point to 2 papers that describe`research based on the theory published by theTransportation Research Board, National Research Council. The problem is that the theoretical component of the research is not the subject of the papers since the audience for this Research and Development project was not concerned with the theory behind the research but the significance and usefulness of its products. To understand how the theory structured the work and the entire graduate program dedicated to it you will need to read papers such as the two others listed. Many products about or based on the theory or leading up to it, have been posted on academia.edu <http://academia.edu/> or published by the Design Management Institute, EDRA, DRS, the National Bureau of Standards, and even you (www.idesignthinking.com.) as the theory was explored and elaborated. Many are referenced in "The Bibliography Behind A Theory of Design Thinking" at www.academia.edu/charlesburnette <http://www.academia.edu/charleburntte> including the K-12 application which was assessed (not very well) by an outside evaluator.
The potential of the theory to structure research, education, and practice hasn’t registered with the gate keepers. I accept much of the blame for that because the theory is still a work in progress and research is no longer a professional activity of mine. So I have created a mess in the design research literature as you suggest, but it is still worth doing! Maybe some researcher some day will see what they missed. Anyway, I’d love to collect that nice Australian wine on offer but I have doubtless side stepped some epistemological hurdles. I’ll pay the penalty per your new rules if need be.
