Hello Jennifer,
In the discussion around participatory design, co-design, or co-creation more generally, I would like to add a more recent perspective, at least in the UK, which is the co-design of research. The Arts and Humanities Research Council has been funding co-design and co-creation activities as part of its Connected Communities programme and had a strand of funding especially for co-design and co-production of research (9 projects). AHRC also facilitated reflection on those 9 projects. A literature review produced as part of that can be found at: http://codesignreflections.wiki-site.com/index.php/Main_Page/Literature_review
I also include some materials from projects I’ve been involved in which you may find relevant to your questions:
