Thanks for doing this, the move from 'free' to 'paid for service' was controversial when it happened and justified by the committee to freelance members as enabling improvements to that area of the website. These never happened as far as I know. Given today the list has dwindled to nine paying freelancers I doubt whether the collection of £630 per year is frankly worth it and will never be enough to enhance features to make it vibrant and genuinely useful. Freelancers, when being asked to pay, were placed in the position to consider marketing gain from participating against other factors (the very tenor of this question). When the list was part of the overall service provided to ALL members, including those looking for freelancers who had made the commitment to be members of GEM, it had some genuine practical, and more significantly community use. It was a bad move by the committee. The fact that there are so few members on this list shows GEM in a poor light in my opinion.
