When we upgraded our servers, we kept the old one running historic content
There's no reason why you can't have two installations, you just need them running different urls, but they can be subdomains ie old.university.ac.uk rather than university.ac.uk

Subject: Re: Access to previous year's modules
We are also considering something similar here at Bradford.
Several years ago at Bradford, we decided that students should only have access to this year academic year's modules and last academic year (e.g. 2013-14 & 2012-13). However, we haven't had the time to un-enrol students / staff from the old modules and archive the modules from Blackboard. So students & staff still have access to modules from 2009-10.
We have had a request from one School to allow students to see all the module for the life of their course as they use a spiral curriculum model and need to refer back to past modules. This is a popular request. Our courses are 3, 4 and 5 years long so that represents a lot of modules to keep! Plus we have a lot redundant modules in the system.
We are re-considering how we can allow students to have access to all their old modules without making a big impact on the live service.
I wonder if it can be done by having 2 installations: current modules and old modules. Maybe by using domains, institutional hierarchies or different URLS?
Has anyone done set up something like this?
