Thank you GK for such a considered response.
This helps to contextualise my questions. As I said, I am quite new to
design research and design thinking was not the focus of my PhD research, so
am not up to date with the divisions you discuss. This is the only design
discussion list I subscribe to and would welcome suggestions of other lists
to join.
I agree that academia is only one part of the picture and am exploring a
range of perspectives on the subject and again welcome any suggestions. I do
not anticipate doing formal research in the area but would like to become
better informed. I am not so concerned with definitions (although I find the
term 'design thinking' ambiguous and confusing in itself and in the many
ways that it is used), but rather with developing my own understanding and
'position' on design thinking to inform my role in design education. For
example, I notice that some business faculties offer design thinking within
their programs without the involvement of any design staff, which leaves
design departments that want to offer design thinking as being seen to
replicate existing offerings or somehow having to differentiate their design
thinking courses from those in the business school. I need to work out what
my strategy might be in relation to this situation, if any.
I appreciate people's responses to the questions I posed. I understand that
many on this list may be tired of naïve questions being raised by those of
us less senior in the field, and of re-surfacing what may be old and
contentious issues, but I hope the list can accommodate people such as
myself who are seeking to gain understanding through connection with the
wider academic design community.
Best wishes,
Toni
