Special Issue of CoDesign – International Journal of CoCreation in Design
and the Arts: Designing Things Together: Intersections of Co-Design
and Actor-Network Theory

Guest editors: Cristiano Storni, Dagny Stuedahl, Thomas Binder and Per
Linde.

In this call, we acknowledge the emergence of an interesting space at the
intersection of co-design and Actor-Network Theory (ANT), especially as
design research is confronted with increasingly complex issues such as
sustainability, social responsibility, inclusion and democracy; and new
approaches such as design activism, design participation, and social
and participatory innovation. The influence of Science and Technology
Studies (STS) on design research has a long history and it is still
enjoying a great deal of attention (Hanset et al, 2004; Ingram et al, 2007;
Woodhouse and Patton, 2004). Through the establishment of pioneering work
in various disciplines such as architecture (Yaneva, 2008), participatory
design (Ehn, 2008), human-computer interaction (DiSalvo, 2012),
user-centred design (Steen, 2012), critical design (Ward and WIlkie, 2010)
some design scholars have already started to explore this ‘coming together’
of theoretical thinking and design practices where different traditions,
approaches and people meet. The interest is mutual and while some STS
scholars have started to appreciate design as a key concern (Latour,
2008a,b, 2013; Yaneva, 2009; Storni, 2012), the more activist wing of STS
are looking at design to extend and re-think the impact of social
research (Woodhouse et al, 2002; Venturini, 2010). As technology
is becoming ubiquitous and pervasive, and design is increasingly recognized
as a driving force for social change, approaches that draw on both STS
(conceptually equipped to deal with socio-techno-scientific issues), and
design (methodologically equipped to intervene in such issues) are of
increasing importance.

Special issue on Intuitive Interaction.

Intuitive interaction or intuitive use has been much talked about but until
recently not much researched. This issue seeks to bring together the
current state of the art in intuitive interaction research, which will then
be easily accessible to a wide audience, and will also encourage take-up of
principles and ideas for implementing intuitive interaction into user
interfaces. Each paper should include a rigorous definition of
intuitive interaction or intuitive use (your own or cited from
previous work). Intuitive interaction should be the main focus of
the research reported in the paper.

Space Architecture: Designing Human Systems Interaction – Session E5.3
25th Symposium On Space Activity & Society, 65th International
Astronautical Congress (IAC 2014)

In response to the diversifying needs of users in space exploration and
commercial spaceflight, interest in human-machine interfaces has continued
to grow in space agencies, industry, and academia. At the same time, the
wider individual and societal implications of the human-technology
relationship have evolved into a key theme of interdisciplinary engagement
with space. This session explores conceptual and applied issues related to
the design of human interaction with space systems. In the context of
habitats and infrastructure in the space and ground segment, these include
interfaces of work stations, consoles, and devices; tools and payload
hardware used in EVA and IVA; remote interaction; human-robotic
partnerships; ambient intelligence, ubiquitous computing, and beyond.Read

open to contingency, chance and change; a practice engaged with singularity
and specificity.

SITUATION highlights ideas of event and the eventful nature of
interiors, lived space-time compositions in constant change; atmospheric
compositions; ephemerality; uniqueness; one-offs; a multiplicity of
experience.

Unlike the traditional journal article format, JAR offers its contributors
a free-to-use online writing space where text can be woven together with
image, audio and video material. This new approach displays research
practice in a manner that respects artists’ modes of presentation and
incorporates web-enabled possibilities for collaboration, debate and
discussion. The result is a journal that promotes experimental approaches
to ‘writing up’ and provides a unique ‘reading’ experience, while carefully
fulfilling the expectations of a peer-reviewed academic journal. We embrace
research practices across and between disciplines, from artists worldwide,
with or without academic affiliation.

Our awareness of space and its role in the interaction process is becoming
more distinct as we move from the earliest two-dimensional graphical user
interface, through to games & virtual reality, and now emerging into mobile
computing, urban computing, ambient computing, tangible computing and
ubiquitous computing.

This workshop will bring together expertise from architecture and human
computer interaction to foreground the role of space in the CHI community.
We welcome participants from a range of disciplines including architecture,
environmental and human factors psychology, computing, HCI, interaction
design, digital arts, geography and cognitive science, as they all
contribute to research on Interaction in Architectural Space. As the
workshop intends to bring together a community of researchers and designers
who are creating interactive technologies in spatial settings, it invites
any high-quality contributions relevant to the workshop topic.

This one-day workshop will be held as part of the CHI 2014 <
http://chi2014.acm.org/> annual ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors
in Computing Science, held in Toronto, Canada 26 April – 1 May.

Interactive technologies have a profound mediating effect on the way
we obtain and contribute to knowledge, relate to each other and contribute
to society. Often, “gender” is not a factor that is explicitly considered
in the design of these technologies. When gender is considered, products
are often designed with idealised models of gendered “users”–designed for
men, designed for women, designed for boys, designed for girls, or designed
for the “average user” who could be male or female. However, the ways in
which gender-bias or gender-neutrality are constructed in the design
process and the resulting effect on the interactive artifacts that are
produced is not well understood. Further, research within the HCI arena has
only begun to scratch the surface of how perceived “gender” influences
interactive product use by users of any gender.

In the area of innovation, design and product development we quite
often seem to know that something works in practice, but might
lack understanding on the theoretical foundations. Many of the topical
issues related to design, development, and innovation that seem to be
regarded as “common knowledge” within the industry, are insufficiently
founded from the theoretical perspective. On the other hand, results of
academic research are often insufficiently disseminated to the industry.

We are calling for evidence-based academic work on topical issues
on design, product development and innovation that strengthens both
our theoretical understanding, and the connection between theory and
practice.

*THE PUBLICS OF ART AND DESIGN*
Parsons The New School for Design, New York.
April 10 and 11, 2014.

What happens to design in public? We are seeking papers that address issues
of audience, user feedback, promotion and dissemination of objects from the
Renaissance to the present. How does design become a dialogue between an
object and its public? How are different publics delineated by their
associations with objects? Papers might address such issues as: advertising
and promotion of products; magazines or other vectors of publicity; retail
spaces; museum exhibitions; world’s fairs; design for public spaces;
theories of reception; domestication of design; or actors and networks.

In 1927, Bruno Taut built himself a house in the south of Berlin. The house
was a richly coloured affair, with a range of colours for walls and
furniture. Those areas of the house that received indirect light were
decked out with the brightest tones. The ceiling of the living room was a
radiant red, designed to act as an inverse to the green of nearby meadows.
Even the radiator and its pipes were set out from the wall and
distinguished from their surroundings with contrasting colours. This
polychromatic exuberance was typical of Taut, and of early modernism.
