Hi Essex (and everybody with a geological collection which is woefully underused please also read on!)
To clarify, this project wasn't led or funded by GCG- the Rockband partnership is a subgroup of SLIME, wonderful folks all in the south east who are striving together to promote science learning through museums. They applied for and received joint funding from HLF to work together on finding ways to promote learning through underused geological collections.
Prior to starting in my current role at the NHM, I lead the team of freelancers who were appointed to research, develop and produce the geology kit- including the collectors box and tactile story mat mentioned in the article - which provides a suite of resources for engaging and wide range of audiences with geological objects and concepts at a range of different levels; the critical thing in our brief was to make sure that the activities were suitable to be led by somebody with little or no geological knowledge.
I'd highly recommend that anybody who has rock, fossil or mineral samples in their handling collection and isn't sure what to do with them, or is asked about running schools sessions on rocks but doesn't know where to start take a look at what the project has accomplished through sharing of ideas, skills and resources across the museums and museum services involved.
The project manager who also chairs the partnership is Christine Taylor at Hampshire County Council Arts and Museums Service- do get in touch with her if you'd like to know more- or contact Phil Hadland in Canterbury who shared the link.
It was a huge privilege to have worked on this project, and as a geologist and a museum educator I'd love to see more projects like this one happening across the UK to raise the confidence of staff and volunteers to work with rocks, fossils and minerals and to the profile and understanding of geology and earth sciences with our audiences!
Best wishes
annette

Shame the GCG didn't choose to have a 4 nations element to this very interesting project. Last time I looked (and speaking as a Geology graduate) there were rocks in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Museums too!
But I might have just dreamt that.

PS of course the rocks in Wales are the best...

Thought Gemmers with geological collections would be interested in this project.
From geocurators - the GCG Blog...
Rockband, a Heritage Lottery Funded partnership, has enabled a group of five museums to bring in expert advice to provide new ideas to help interpret and communicate about their geology collections in innovative and exciting ways, as well as promoting partnership working. The collections have been used to reach out to new audiences including blind and partially sighted people. New geology sessions have enabled members of the public to understand the relationship between the geology of the local area, building stones and the natural landscape...
