Hi Folks,
While I'm temporarily back in your fold (thanks to all the people who gave very helpful suggestions about my last query) I just wanted to mention that I've restarted my blog with a different focus.
Some of you may know that for several years I've tried to use my blog to discuss research issues and present interesting case examples or resources and a few have been kind enough to express appreciation.
As I'm now retired and in a much more self-indulgent mood I'm restarting the blog to look at what I feel are pointful examples of design in action, things that I encounter that offer lessons to other designers. As it would be very easy to slip into grumpy old bloke mode and swipe out at modern stuff I don't like, I'm rationing myself to no more than 50% negative criticism. I'll try not to forget that I have been an academic, and I've benefited from the very tough school on this forum, but I'm not pretending that this is research.
So my first post is about the work of the Swiss luthier, Lukas Brunner, an inventive craftsman whose work has greatly enhanced my life.http://chrisrust.wordpress.com/2013/12/15/art-lives-from-constraints-lukas-brunner-inventive-guitar-maker/
I'll be following up with an example of sloppy service design which I found lurking in a corner of a local railway station. Next week I'm off with colleagues from CycleSheffield to look at one of the most ambitious examples so far of "shared space" street design. Surprisingly it's not in the Netherlands or Scandinavia but here in the North of England, quite close to Manchester. So I'll hope to be writing about what we see and how the design is working in action. Here's a video about the scheme. If you've not seen it and you are interested in urban design it's quite a treat.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vzDDMzq7d0
So if you enjoy my ramblings, maybe you'll sign up for notifications. NB I get no reward for this, no clickbait, just the pleasure of knowing that somebody might read it.
Best wishes from sunny SheffieldChris
