Hi Sasha

In haste and coming at this from a slightly different direction -I completed an internal consultancy on School Library Services(SLS) about three months ago for the council Culture Team. Stockport's SLS took over the museum artefact loan service back in 1989. I picked up a fair bit of information on combined services with artefact/art loan schemes and would suggest two interesting examples of well-developed loan schemes embedded below :

Derbyshire School Library Service

Background: originally a separate Museum Loan Service, AV Loan Service and SLS-now merged.

Offer: Books, paintings, AV and artefacts (66,000 items)

Status: Traded Service sitting within the Public Library Service but do not receive any financial support from the PLS

Management: Head of the Children's Library manages the service but the SLS has a dedicated Development Manager

Background: Calderdale museum, arts and library teams are a fully integrated service. They launched "Discover" the children's and schools museum and library service in 2006.

The art collection is currently not available on-line(only 8 images but it can be accessed by the Public Catalogue Foundation)

Staff still have specialist roles i.e. museum or library but are part of the one team. Areas of the service are delivered by different members of staff depending on their expertise.

Offer: The services looked a ways they could use the museums and libraries resources to provide the best service for schools-so strong focus on capitalising on synergy across the two services and embedding thematic planning to inform development. Loans boxes now contain original art works and artefacts. The kinds of materials going out to schools has changed to incorporate the best of each service e.g. evacuees resource changed radically.

* When there is a new exhibition the staff will plan together what museum and library resources can be developed and utilised to support it.
* Outside events also act as a focus for programming e.g. the big draw or summer reading challenge.

The Discover package: free topic books, museum handling collections, artist boxes, story boxes, local history material, DVDs, CDs and fiction collections, advice and support.

There are huge changes taking place across SLS and in many ways they are and have been an easy target for cuts. So it would be worth talking to the Head of ASCEL for an overview(ASCEL is a national membership network of Senior Children's and Education Librarians, who work together to stimulate developments and share initiatives relating to children and young people in public libraries and educational services)

Afternoon all

The Royal Cornwall Museum is in the process of developing the Cornwall Schools Art Collection.

The collection of around 116 works, including pieces from Ben Nicholson and Barabra Hepworh was started after the then County Council received an anonymous donation in May 1961 of £100, with a simple note saying 'To help Primary School funds'.

After much thought it was agreed that it should be used to buy art for the benefit of local school children. Local artists then sold the council pieces at reasonable prices and the collection was born.

The collection has been in storage for a number of years, we are now conserving a few pieces from collection and considering how we get the collections out to schools.

I was wondering if there are any other collections like this and how they work - in terms of application from schools, installation & display, accompanying learning packages, insurance, as well as any digital projects that could extend the reach of the scheme so it reaches more than a few schools.

Thanks in advance.

Sasha
