medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks for the links, Marjorie, and Congratulations for what appears to be a
very good start on a very useful website.
the general layout looks pretty good (after a too-brief visit), and the
transcription practice i tried worked without a problem.
the only suggestion i would make --coming from my own, intermediate, needs for
the 11th-12th c. work which i do-- would be to pass on from the "flashy" but
rather rarefied area of Royal Charters and Papal Bulls to the more mundane
(and much more common and useful) realm of original charters and cartularies
from a wide variety of regions in France.
i understand that your project has just begun and suppose that this is,
indeed, the direction your group will be heading in, apparently beginning with
the fonds of the abbey of Agaune (which, i have to admit, i've never heard
of).
my own work has centered for quite a few years in the Chartres region and i
know that the departemental archives of the Eure-et-Loir are particularly rich
in original documents (many as yet unpublished or published in
less-than-precise 19th c. editions) and would, of course, like to see some of
these show up on your site.
this is not just because of the "information" contained in the charters, but
also for their palaeographic significance in a much larger project which still
needs to be undertaken (certainly by someone much more qualified than i) --a
comprehensive study of the palaeography of the chancellery and "book" hands in
the chartrain region in the 11th through 13th cc., with the aim of
establishing provenances, relative chronologies and (my own selfish interest)
perhaps even some absolute dating of manuscript illuminations.
in addition to the surviving original charters, a relatively small --but
important-- number of books from Chartres scriptoria were partially
photographed before the catastrophe of May, 1944, and these would be essential
to such an undertaking.
thanks again for informing this list of your project, and the best of luck on
your continuing work.
best,
christopher
