Do you want to know how to encourage schools to work with your museum and engage children with collections?
Somerset Heritage & Libraries Service is holding a FREE training day on cross-curricular uses of museums objects in Taunton, Somerset on Monday 7 February. We currently have 4 places remaining.
The training day will inform museum professionals and volunteers about the ’Take One…’ model, a hugely successful project created by the National Gallery. It is aimed at showing teachers how single objects (artefacts, documents, paintings and sites) can be used as a valuable resource across the curriculum.
It will cover areas such as:
1. How to chose a single object from your massive collection which will inpspire teachers and children alike
2. Techniques for unveiling objects to teachers and children
3. How to think like a children and engage with objects
4. Lines of enquiry that could be sued in a classroom
5. How to prepare resources d host CPD days
6. Two case studies of previous projects, one from a museum point of view, and one from a teachers.
Previous CPD days have been held using the model in Somerset for teachers and for museums. Below are just a few comments made by teachers attending those days which demosntrate how useful the ‘Take One…’ model is:
“…the day was inspirational and I have been supported in implementing the project in school. This is just the kind of thing we need to keep the curriculum fresh, interesting and creative.”
“Because it was so cross-curricular we were able to incorporate normal lessons and didn’t have to compromise on any other areas of learning.”
“It was good for local information and knowledge, pooling ideas and thinking about how to use all the museums resources in school to motivate children.”
To get a sense of what this project may include, you can have a look at the National Gallery’s website (www.takeonepicture.org). This includes case studies of projects schools have done based on pictures from the National Gallery’s collection and an overview of how this project will be structured.
