Hi All,
I know it's early to start thinking about Fall, but this year's GSA
abstract deadline is JUNE 3, so coming up very soon! I want to bring the
"Teaching Petrology and Structural Geology in the 21st Century" session
and workshop to your attention. We'd love to have you participate in one
or both of those. Let's not forget the importance and fun of teaching!
The 'On the cutting edge' programs are always a great source of
inspiration. If you are teaching (structural) geology please check out
the following website and links if you have never done so already:
http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/structure/index.html
It's a great resource.
But not quite as good as personal participation and interaction with
your fellow teachers in the workshop and/or session below.
I hope to see you in Fall and please don't forget to submit an abstract!
Al the best,
Yvette
WORKSHOP

519. Teaching Petrology and Structural Geology in the 21st Century.
Sat., 4 Oct., 8 am-5 pm
Cosponsored by On the Cutting Edge; GSA Structural Geology & Tectonics
Division; GSA Geoscience Education Division.
Barbara Tewksbury, Hamilton College; Yvette D. Kuiper, Boston College;
Jeffrey Ryan, Univ. of South Florida. Limit: 50. Fee: US$45; includes
lunch. CEU: 0.8.
This workshop is a follow-on to the highly successful 2003 and 2004 “On
the Cutting Edge” workshops on “Teaching Petrology and Teaching
Structural Geology in the 21st Century.” We seek participants who can
share innovative and effective classroom, lab, field, or GIS activities
or who have ways to integrate concepts from these two disciplines into
courses taught in other areas of the undergraduate curriculum. This
workshop will also provide an opportunity for discussing issues related
to teaching the two disciplines. Participants will contribute their
activities to the Cutting Edge online resource collections for teaching
petrology and structural geology (http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/).
ORAL/POSTER SESSION
(From Barb Tewksbury:)
It's been almost five years since the 2003 and 2004 /Cutting Edge
/workshops on /Teaching Petrology and Teaching Structural Geology in the
21st Century/. We're putting together a GSA session (poster and oral, if
we get enough submissions) to showcase all the great things that people
have developed since then for classroom, lab, field, and GIS activities
for teaching undergraduate petrology and structural geology and for
integrating concepts into courses taught in other areas of the
undergraduate curriculum.
We hope that you will submit an abstract!! Remember that, this year, GSA
will allow you to submit two volunteered abstracts, either one oral and
one poster or two posters, in addition to any invited papers you've been
asked to give. So there's no excuse for not submitting to our session!
Here are the nuts and bolts:
