A while ago I posted a request for advice / information on simple lace
making activities. Thanks to everyone who got back to me. Almost
everyone advised contacted the Lace Guild. I did get two ladies through
them who have been here one afternoon a week over the Easter Holidays.
If anyone is thinking of doing anything similar, I'd highly recommend
it.
The activity they laid on proved extremely popular with children and
adults alike, provoking one of the best responses I've had to a drop in
workshop. What most surprised me was the number of boys between the
ages of 8 and 10 who happily sat for nearly an hour making their piece
of lace. There was clearly something about the level of concentration
and the puzzle like process involved that really appealed to them - even
one 13 year old boy who was on his way back from the pub to collect his
brother (!) was persuaded to sit down and have a go!
The Lace Guild are really passionate about seeing this craft continue
and getting young people involved so do get in touch with your local
group to see if they can help http://www.laceguild.demon.co.uk/ . The
ladies I had are Essex based, but they do travel!
Best wishes
