medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is fascinating, rather like Andersen's "Red Shoes."

They were struck by divine punishement forcing them to dance on and on for a whole year until next Christmas eve when they were relieved from their ban through the intervention of archbishop Heribert of Cologne. Afterwards they fell into sleep for several days, from which some of them never awoke, while others remained suffering from painful spasm and kept wandering through Europe for several years, begging for alms and seeking a cure for their illness. There are several reports of this story, one of them said to have been dictated by the later Pope Leo IX.
