We have both in our yard. Acanthuses/acanthoi are remarkably ugly
f-to-f [They have flower stalks that look as if they are bearing turtle
heads.] , but we try to grow classical plants here in Seattle.. You
can trace the acanthus through the illustrated ms tradition & they are
quite consistent.
It should be noted that the handwriting in this Menologion

is the most beautiful Greek script ever devised. I saw it at the
Metropolitan several years ago, and watched a 10-year old Greek girl
sounding out the words. Her parents apologized for her being in my
way. I told them they were privileged to have such a daughter.
