medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I thought we went thrugh this years ago. Architecture historians
require the following three items to qualify for Gothic:
1:Pointed arches.
2:Rib vault.
3:Flying buttresses.
The pointe arches make intersections of different widths
commuensurate.
The rib vaults are lighter that the older types since the ribs support
the structure and light fill masonry can be used to close them.
Flying buttresses support the roof and take the strain off the walls
so they can be opened up with large windows to let in light,
facilitating the shift from mosaics and othe wall decorations to the
stained glass windows. Etc.
Hey, Crockers, we had some exchanges on all this and you said that you
had been converted to Bannister Fletcher (q.v. again). Have you
fallen into heresy? The first Gothic structure was in a rennovation
of Vezelay Cathedral in Paris under the the Abbot Suger (q.v.) There
is an excellent film on the whole transition from Romaneque to Gothic
that I use in my aarchitecture class called "A White Garment of
Churches." Try it. You'll like it.
