medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>I don;t see what's wrong with 'pointed'.
the only thing wrong with using "pointed" to define "gothic" is that it
doesn't cover all the stops.
to take some examples from Burgundy alone:

or

or

or even (barely)
http://www.paradoxplace.com/Photo%20Pages/France/North_&_Centre/Fontevraud/Images/800/Fontevraud-Sept-DP4425sAR800.jpg
plenty of points, there, but not much "gothic" to be seen (unless you want to
define the term by "points" alone, nail one foot to the floor and run around
in circles).
as we say in Southern Indianer, That Dog Won't Hunt.
so, what to do with something like this:
http://www.paradoxplace.com/Photo%20Pages/France/North_&_Centre/Noirlac/Images/800/Nave-Jun05-DC2516sAR800.jpg
ahhh, we could just define the term with "ribs, ribs, ribs"
then we'd have this conundrum:

or thisun:

well, how about "flying butresses" ?
can't have those without having a "gothic" building, in a Just Universe.

rose windows anyone?

in short, "gothic" simply can't be defined by the presence or absence of its
individual constituent elements.
it's a Modren Construct, guys.
don't let it Tyranize you.
then there's the question of "romanesque" vs "gothic" sculpture....
i think that this one is definitely "romanesque":
