Dear GEM list,
We're in the process of packing up our handling collection here at
Wandsworth Museum, and we've no idea how long things might be in storage. I
am wondering what anyone does, or might suggest doing, for moth (or any
insect, for that matter) protection for clothing? We have a few nice
reproduction costumes, some of wool, as well as some WWII items that are
woollen. Also some sheepskin rugs for sitting on. I know moth balls do the
trick, but it is then so hard to get the smell out. I'm not sure if there's
a health and safety issue with having children try on costumes smelling
heavily of moth balls. Does anyone know about this?? I've purchased
something from the dry cleaners that has a much milder scent, but I know
nothing of its effectiveness. It's also rather expensive. Any advice on
this would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Lisa
