Isn't it the idea that individual practitioners might have a POCT 'passport' which holds details of all the equipment and tests they are trained and accredited to use and undertake? This information is encoded in a smart card which is slotted into the POCT device and a PIN entered before use. This facilitates an audit trail and helps ensure practitioners are competent. Not perfect of course (cards and PINS can be 'lent') but a step in the right direction.

Joan,
This issue came up at the CPA conference in Newcastle on Tuesday.
CPA said they didn't think it was appropriate for them to accredit
community based PoCT.
They did say that UKAS were looking into the concept of 'licensing'
individuals to carry out PoCT in the community.
Cheryl Blair at CPA should be able to provide you with more information.
Wayne Bradbury.

Subject: Accreditation of POCT
On reading the minutes of our Regional 2006 AGM at our recent 2007 AGM,
I noted that the ACB was to produce some guidance on the use and
accreditation of POCT, to be submitted to the DoH. This followed
disappointment at the outcome of a meeting with the MHRA.
Has anything been developed or drafted?
I'm well aware that while the MDA Device Bulletin DB2002(03), on
Management of POCT, provides excellent guidance, it is just that and we
lack any national regulations on POCT, or system for formal
accreditation, unlike many other countries. Many of us consider that
something is needed, and I'm sure that the ACB is the right organisation
to lead an initiative. I'm less sure that the DoH, with its "hands off"
approach to such things, will be particularly interested, though.
