Beyond the Search Engine: Oxford, March 23rd 2007
-----------------------------------------------------
Beyond the Search Engine continues the successful 'Beyond...' series of
speeches and debates hosted by the Learning Technologies Group at the
University of Oxford. This year the conference examines how students learn,
what advice they are given, how academics can help students through
appropriate guidance on use of material.
Jude Carroll, world renown expert on plagiarism, will be informing us on
why "Student plagiarism is different to normal plagiarism"
Dr Sara de Freitas, who is the author of Learning in immersive worlds: JISC
report into games-based learning, will be setting the scene "The Challenges
of Social Collaboration on the Internet - Forming social networks".
A panel of pupils and students will discuss the topic: "Has today's
technology changed the learning experience in the 21st Century?" How
rigorous are they in critically examining information? What advice are they
given about appropriate studying behaviour?
Kevin Donovan FRSA will provide his view on "Personalised learning: the
final privatisation"
And the day is rounded off by a debate. "This house believes that the rise
of technology is undermining the traditional values of rigour and integrity
in academic research and study." (includes presentations from the speakers
plus a lengthy debate with the floor, followed by a vote on the motion).
Speakers in the debate include the designer of Turnitin Plagiarism Detection
System, a representative of the UK's leading essay bank service, the Founder
President of the US Centre for Academic Integrity and an UK Academic lawyer.
