'A Road to Freedom . . .'

Post: Project Coordinator

Location: Northampton

Project Background

'A road to Freedom is a project initiated by Churches Together in
Northampton which unites schools in the Excellence Cluster and community
groups working with English Heritage and the Northampton Black History
Association, in order to explore the history of slavery, abolition and
slavery today. The project will work with young people from four schools
and a community group in Northampton to create performances acknowledging
the bicentenary in March 2007, of the parliamentary act which abolished the
trans-Atlantic slave trade. The first of these events will take place on
Sunday 25 march, 2007.

This is a heritage project that will use archive material, personal stories,
music, visual presentations and drama to explore and reflect the history of
the black resistance and struggle and the involvement of ordinary working
people and prominent figures in the abolition movement, including those in
the Northamptonshire area.

The project coordinator will oversee all aspects of the project including
coordinating participatory workshops in the schools and the community, event
management of the performances, documentation and evaluation of the
activities, organise the recording of the activities and the event, carrying
out research , developing suitable materials to share with participants and
the general public on the history of the issues as well as marketing and
publicising the activities to diverse communities.

A Road to Freedom... acknowledges that slavery is apart of all our
histories. It invites participants to be part of a journey rather than
suggest that issues are resolved. The choice and style of music and
development of performances will be rooted in the cultural interests of the
participants and facilitated by the project coordinator.
