medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Can anyone tell me how, and more pertinently when, the putative siblings
Mary Magdalene, Martha, and Lazarus fetched up on 29th July, particularly in
the Benedictine Use? The question has come up in the context of the Fleury
Playbook, but I fancy that is too early...
(In his new edition of the music of the last three plays, The Fleury
Playbook III: Plays of Conversion and Rebirth, Antico Edition, 2007 [I
think...] MCM6, Wyndham Thomas makes a good case for Resuscitacio Lazari
being performed on 22nd July - not necessarily as part of the liturgy, of
course: there is thinking that the Fleury Plays were paraliturgical drama,
so to speak. But he also raises the possibility of 29th July, although his
reference is to the Graduale Triplex (Solesmes, 1973) p.873 - so I am not
convinced!)
