medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Jon Cannon <[log in to unmask]>
> This must be about as far from the suibject of this list as it is possible
to get
not at all.
>I find visits to temples in these parts most instructive, as at their best I
suspect they bring us closer to the 'experience' of medieval religion than
much that survives in the west.
unquestionably.
the "experience" of what passes for exoteric "Christianity" in the West
clearly has very little to do with what was going on in the 1.5-cameral minds
of the middlevils whom we purport to study.
>This is more true of Hong Kong and southern China in general than where I am
now, as traditional religion is more alive there.
> But it is even truer of Tibet, where I have sometimes had to pinch myself
with the intensity of recognition of this or that pilgrim/ritual activity.
i can well imagine.
> Not the detail so much as the spirit of it.
though many of the "details" can survive the translation.
the "Perennial Relgion" is, after all, well, Perennial.
> As for North Korea, as you can see it hermetically sealed and devoted to an
arcane theology with its own sacred sites and holy places, so perhaps it is
the post-Stalinist equivalent of one of the more severe Orders...
an interesting comparison.
in addition to the Insularity, the (perhaps Bi-Cameral) Devotion, the "arcane"
theology and sacred sites you also have the element common to both the The
Dear Leader's PRK regime and the Facts on the Ground in the M.A. of near (or
sometime terminal) Starvation, which amazingly Sharpens the Mind and is a
great Boon to Hallucinatory Behavior in general.
> But I fear I am testing the patience of even the most light-handed
moderator.
Nutz.
it is well known here that ole Light-Handed George is an Avatar of Patience.
