<<Please excuse a slightly odd contribution to this thread. ... I vividly
remember the Bishop of Calgary, a very strong, large man who knocked so
enthusiastically on the door of a new church in the suburbs that his staff went
right through the door!..
And now an even odder contribution: this story puts me in mind of the
ritual included in the State Opening of Parliament in the UK, when Black Rod (not
a swarthy Roderick, but an official who carries a black rod of office)
summons the Commons to the Lords to hear the sovereign's speech. The door is
slammed in his face, and he has to knock on it with his staff. See

(http://www.parliament.uk/docs/HofLstateopening.pdf) for the official account of it all. The given reason has to do
with 17th c history, but throughout this thread I have wondered whether the
form it takes owes something to an ecclesiastical tradition.
