medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. January) is the feast day of:
Vitalian (d. 72) Vitalian became pope in 657. Little is known of
his earlier history; he may have been from Segni in Campania. Once
again, my saints' book has failed me when it comes to any suggestion
of why a pope was regarded as particularly saintly. V. was involved
in the monothelite controversy and sent Theodore of Tarsus to England.
Theodoric of Orleans (d. 1022) Theodoric served as a monk of
St-Pierre-le-Vif (Sens) and as a royal counsellor before becoming
bishop of Orleans.
Gilduin (d. 1077) Gilduin was a count's son of Brittany. He became
a canon at a young age and was elected bishop in 1076, when he was
about 24 years old. But G. was a humble sort and adamantly refused
to become a bishop. He traveled to Rome and actually succeeded in
talking Gregory VII into letting him off the hook. G. then died on
his journey back home.
John of Warneton (blessed) (d. 1130) John was from the Arras region.
After his studies he became a monk in that region, but the bishop of
Arras soon got J. out of the monastery to become his archdeacon. In
time, J was elected bishop of Therouanne. He was an active monastic
reformer as well as being gentle and charitable.
