medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. January) is the feast day of:
Vincent of Zaragoza (d. 304) Vincent was a deacon of Zaragoza. He
was arrested along with Bishop Vincent; the two were imprisoned and
starved for a while. When they didn't weaken, the governor exiled
Valerius, but ordered Vincent's torture. Prudentius tells of how
they worked him over---he was racked, torn with hooks, roasted on a
gridiron---but still wouldn't weaken. Angels comforted V when he was
thrown back into prison, and he soon died.
Anastasius the Persian (d. 628) Anastasius was a Persian soldier
(originally named Magundat). He got interested in Christianity and
eventually settled down in a monastery near Jerusalem. There he
seems to have read a lot about early martyrs. He decided on
emulation, so went to Caesarea (at that time under Persian rule) and
denounced Zoroastrianism. A. was beaten and imprisoned, proved
thoroughly uncooperative, and was finally strangled (along with about
70 other Christian captives. His body was thrown out for the dogs,
who decided he was inedible, so the Christians were able to claim it.
Dominic of Sora (d. 1031) Dominic was a monk who worked actively as
a monastery founder in Italy.
