A view from across the Pond:
As with most things in the U.S., it's about the money. The AMA wants to
make sure that billing for professional services remains exclusively
within the domain of physicians. As long as the U.S. healthcare system
is based on a primarily fee-for-service model, the AMA will fiercely
protect its turf, citing the laudable goal of "patient safety" as the
reason.
Who can argue against that, other than those of us who train physicians
in laboratory medicine?
