... we can indulge in a little entertainment.
We all know that one thing which it is difficult
to set up in courses on statistics is practical
experience of the real-world material with which
the subject deals, namely the operation of the
processes of chance in real life.
Physicists and chemists, after all, have opportunity
in their courses for practical laboratory work, where
they can see what really happens when they strut their
stuff with "live ammunition". In statistics courses,
however, exposure to the experience of chance outcomes
tends to be limited to simulating random numbers drawn
from normal or uniform distributions, which inevitably
seems tame.
This may be about to change, however, according to an
article in this morning's Guardian:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/gambling/story/0,,1697809,00.html
"College bets on casino degree
Degree courses in roulette, blackjack and
casino management offered for first time
at 'gambling academy'.
The 'academy' in question is Blackppol and Fylde College,
and the curriculum for the course is on page 9 (of 10)
in the Prospectus for Tourism, Sports and Leisure which
is a short PDF file:
http://www.blackpool.ac.uk/pdf/he_prospectus/extracts/
tourism_sports_leisure.pdf
[all one line]
Some of the items in the curriculum prompt speculation,
such as
Managing to Maximise Casino Performance;
New Technology within Casino Operations;
Business Ethics and Social Responsibility.
The 10th page of the Prospectus is the curriculum for
the Foundation Degree in Cruiseline Operations. Struck
by a certain similarity of format, I suspected a computer
generated text. So I put this hypothesis to the test, and
you can do the same:
Wherever you see an instance of any of the words
Cruise
Cruiseline
Cruising
substitute "Dog Training". The result seemed to make
perfect sense to me (with the possible exception of
one slight clash).
Best wishes to all,
Ted.
