I am also amazed that, as Letters Editor of RSS News, RSS Members, some of
whom contribute to the lively debates on this list, haven't written to me
about the editorial a month or so ago about the National Centre for
Excellence in Teaching Mathematics.
I have been wondering what a sorry state that we have got into that (a) we
need such a centre and (b) there is continuing debate from a managerial
point of view about the syllabuses and whether coursework is good or bad.
I can see both arguments but what I fail to understand is that no-one has
picked up on the covert 13+ that has existed in maths - and science -
GCSEs for years and IMHO is a fundamental reason for the poor performance
in those subjects, particularly among boys.
So I am waiting at [log in to unmask] for contributions to this
debate so that it may become more mainstream. Or any other topic that may
have statistical/RSS/RSSN connections for that matter!
Or are we all just clever clogs who like to hide behind the word radical
and don't want to put our heads above the parapet???
Best wishes
John
