medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
What is the current thinking regarding the Use of Bangor, as invoked
(somewhat mysteriously) in the Preface to the Book of Common Prayer? Did it
actually exist? And how much is known about it? (For that matter, what
about the Use of Lincoln?)
These questions are provoked by A.H. Pearson (in The Sarum Missal in
English, 1868) claiming that what Maskell, in The Ancient Liturgy of the
Church of England, printed as 'The Use of Bangor' was actually a MS of the
Sarum Use. I haven't seen Maskell's 1882 edition, so I don't know if (or
how) he answered that. Pearson suggests that only the printed Uses of
Sarum, York and Hereford can be regarded as separate Uses, and that it is
only with the printed editions that the Uses become sufficiently consistent
for this purpose. To a certain extent this is the Victorian editors trying
to justify their reliance on the printed editions, but with more
sophistication than they are usually given credit for.
