medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. November) is the feast day of :
All Saints (which makes the rest of this list feel pretty useless).
There was certainly an early feast in the eastern church to
commemorate all martyrs, which seems to have been celebrated in May
or so. As was usually the case, the practice gradually drifted
westward. The Pantheon in Rome was rededicated in honor of all the
saints on 13. May 610, and the feast seems to have been celebrated on
that time (although other dates are attested outside of Rome) The
first clear reference to an All Saints' Day on 1. November comes from
England, where the feast was introduced in the early eighth century.
Pope Gregory IV in the ninth century moved it to 1. November for
everyone. At any rate, happy Samhain.
Benignus of Dijon (3rd cent.?) One legend tells that Benignus was a
disciple of Polycarp, killed during the reign of Marcus Aurelius.
Whoever and whenever he was, B. evangelized around Burgundy
Marcellus (d. c. 410) The subject of a vita by Venantius Fortunatus,
Marcellus was a Parisian who took to prayer and theological studies.
He became archdeacon and succeeded Prudentius as bishop of Paris.
Venantius tells lots of great miracle stories, including M.
overcoming a dragon. M. was buried in a catacomb on the left bank of
the Seine, the site of the suburb of Saint-Marceau these days.
Cadfan (6th cent.) Cadfan led a group of Bretons (from Brittany) to
Wales to settle. He founded a monastery and a church on Ynys Enlli
(Bardsey Island).
Nonius (blessed) (d. 1431) Nun' Alvares de Pereira was born near
Lisbon. He trained for a military career, married, and became
constable of Portugal. He led the Portuguese army to a major victory
against the Castilians. And then in 1422 N. became a Carmelite lay
brother at the friary he founded in Lisbon. His cult was approved in
1918.
