My favourite comment along these lines was a question I got from a first-year
student a couple of years ago: "Do we actually have to read the textbook, or can we
just skim it?"
As for ads at the bottom of messages, does anyone ever read them? I don't. In a
culture of commercial hype, it is necessary to learn not to see, in order to survive.
