medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
By "less well known", I mean from a standpoint of general knowledge
today. Which makes most saints "less well known". Well known pre-
modern saints from the territories of the Regno are relatively few:
those who come to mind right away are Januarius, Thomas Aquinas, and
such immigrants as Benedict of Nursia and Montecassino (just barely, as
Montecassino was in border territory), the apostles Andrew and Matthew,
and Nicholas of Myra. In a second group I'd place the once popular
Elmo and Vitus; also, though here the general knowledge is increasingly
an academic one only, Severinus of Noricum and the Lucullanum, Paulinus
of Nola, Nilus of Rossano, and Bruno the Carthusian.
Best again,
John Dillon
