medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where Phyllis lives and works, lies some
seventy miles north of the Gulf coastal area upon which the US and
world press have been focusing. But it was in the direct path of
hurricane Katrina and will clearly have suffered too.
Prompted today by an announcement from the United States Postal Service
that includes Hattiesburg among the areas to which delivery of mail has
been suspended, I did a little Web surfing just now to see what I could
discover about the situation there. The results are mixed.
To judge from this report, Hattiesburg's commercial center was badly
damaged, whereas destruction in residential areas appears to have been
sporadic.

Power is being (or by now has been) restored to trunk lines in the
central city, but "it could be weeks or months" before some have
electricity again:

Water service has also been restored in the central city:

People living in outlying areas who use electricity to power individual
well pumps will of course be without water for at least as long as they
lack power.
That last news item also refers provisions for the distribution of
food, ice, and (liquid) water. It's hot down there, and some have
become testy:

And, on top of all that, Hattiesburg is sheltering some 1500 refugees
from harder-hit areas:

All in all, not cheery reading.
Best wishes to Phyllis (and to Heraclius) and prayers for a good
outcome,
John Dillon
