medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. June) is the feast day of:
Ferreolus and Ferrutio (d. c.212) Ordained as priest and deacon by
Irenaeus of Lyons, F and F were sent to evangelize in the Besancon
area. They worked there for 30 years before being arrested as
Christians in the reign of Caracalla. They were tortured and then
beheaded.
Julitta and Cyricus (d. c. 304) Julitta was a wealthy widow who fled
with her young son Cyriacus to escape Diocletian's persecution. She
was arrested in Tarsus, tried, and tortured. Her son (about 3 years
old) tried to get to mom, declaring loudly that he was a Christian,
too---the governor was so mad he threw the kid down a flight of steps
(killing him). J. was beheaded. The tale of J and C was very
popular in the Middle Ages, especially in France (Auxerre got the
purported relics of Cyriacus (Cyr) in the fourth century).
Tychon (5th cent.) Tychon became bishop of Amathus (Limassol,
Cyprus) and spent his episcopate trying to subdue the popular worship
of Aphrodite on the island. He is a patron of viticulture: legend
tells that he made a dead vine cutting produce fruit.
Benno (d. c. 1106) Benno of Meissen was a count's son who became a
canon at SS Simeon and Jude in Goslar. He served as chaplain to
Emperor Henry IV and was made bishop of Meissen in 1066. But B.
disloyally supported Gregory VII against the emperor. He was
imprisoned for a year for supporting the Saxon rebellion and was
deposed by the pro-imperial bishops in 1085. The antipope Guibert
reinstated B. in 1088, but in 1097 B. transferred his allegiance to
Urban II. B. spent the last years of his life as a missionary to the
Wends. B. was canonized in 1523 and Martin Luther had quite a lot to
say about it.
Lutgardis (d. 1246) Lutgardis was a native of Tongres (Brabant),
sent to a convent at age 12. She was an indifferent nun until she
had a vision of Christ. She went on to have a great many more
visions, levitated, dripped blood, and prophesied. She is regarded
as one of the leading mystics of the thirteenth century.
