medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. June) is the feast day of:
Justin Martyr (d. c. 165) Justin was an adult convert to
Christianity. Since he had had a good classical education, he ended
up debating about Christianity with philosophers, opened a school of
philosophy in Rome, and wrote about the merits of Christianity over
Judaism. He fell foul of a Cynic in Rome, who denounced him to the
authorities, whereupon he was flogged and then beheaded. Justin is
the first significant Christian apologist.
Pamphilus and companions (d. 309) Pamphilus was from Beirut. He
studied at the Alexandria catechetical school, founded his own Bible
school at Caesarea, edited the Bible, gave wealth to the poor, etc.
He was arrested as a Christian in 308; after a long time in prison,
P. and two others were sentenced to death. They were beheaded, but
the governor had one of his own servants crucified as a Christian at
the same time, and when one of P's students asked for his body, he
was tortured and finally burned to death.
Simeon of Syracuse (d. 1035) Simeon was a native of Syracuse, was
educated at Constantinople, and became a hermit on the bank of the
Jordan River. But he went on to monasteries in Bethlehem and Mt.
Sinai, and eventually was sent to Normandy to collect money promised
by Duke Richard II. After many adventures, including pirates, S.
made it to Rouen, only to discover that the duke had died. S. made
his way back to Palestine, accompanying Archbishop Poppo of Trier,
and became a hermit again. He was formally canonized in 1042.
Inigo (d. 1057) Inigo was a hermit, then a monk at San Juan de la
Pena, then a hermit. In c. 1029 King Sancho the Great convinced him
to serve as abbot over a group of monks chosen to reform the
monastery at Ona. I. proved to be a very successful reformer,
besides a good peace-maker, and a reputed miracle-worker. He was
probably canonized by Alexander III.
