medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Friday, 6. May, is the feast day of:
Evodius (d. c. 64) Evodius was one of the seventy disciples of
Jesus. Tradition tells that he was bishop of Antioch. E. is reputed
to have been the first person to use the word "Christian" to describe
members of the Jesus movement.
Eadbert (d. 698) Eadbert was a monk at Lindisfarne, a biblical
scholar. He succeeded St. Cuthbert as bishop and won a reputation
for his generosity to the poor.
Petronax (d. c. 747) Petronax was a native of Brescia. While on a
pilgrimage to Rome in 717 he visited Monte Cassino and ended up
organizing the group of hermits living there and rebuilding the
monastery. He served as abbot of the revived Monte Cassino for 30
years, and is regarded as the monastery's second founder.
