medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Brenda,
The quotation "amore langueo" was of old included in Marian liturgy, and
widespread in various fragmentary forms. Some of the verses from the
Song of Songs were abbreviated for a specific purpose, as it happens
in the woodcut "Canticum Canticorum" (around c.1470) where the verse
5,8 has the form:
"Filie iherusalem annunciate dilecto . quia amore langueo" (no more)
[my transcript after the original in the Bibl. Nat. in Paris, Xylo.27]*
compare with an online 'Vulgate':
5:8 adiuro vos filiae Hierusalem si inveneritis dilectum meum
ut nuntietis ei quia amore langueo
Any similar quotation is thus not necessarily taken directly from a
Bible, but more likely from the many already circulating excerpts
associated with Marian devotion. 13th cent. sources included.
