medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Marjorie Greene <[log in to unmask]>
> I am truly appalled at the ugliness of the debate over the review of
Rochelle's book. All of this should have been kept private; it has no place on
a semi-public list.
i disagree, and think that if folks want to make fools of themselves in
public, they should be given eversomuch rope as they require to do so.
listmembers not interested in --or even "appalled" by-- the discussion should
be granted Unlimited Licence to Delete without Reading.
> George discourages communication, especially of this sort, between
individuals.
i was not aware of that, and, if true, suggest that George mind his own
bidness, the idea of this list needing a Mommie being rather offensive to me
on principle.
otOh, i have taken a look at Rochelle's book --have it in front of me as i
speak, actually-- and have to say that it doesn't look to me like it has two
heads.
rather nicely produced, published by one of the formost publishers and book
dealers (Oak Knoll, in Delaware) specialising in "Books on Books" on the
Planet --which makes a very nice fit with both the subject of this book ("The
Story of Writing Systems in the West") and the interesting "in-between" status
it occupies, being, obviously, scholarly and well-researched in nature (n.b.,
i venture no opinion about the Correctness of its ideas), yet intended for
--what was it?-- "a literate, lay audience" (which must be the very definition
of an Endangered Species, these daze).
having a rather perverse sense of humor, i'm not so much "appalled" at the
tone of the reactions to Rochelle's work --both here and, much more so, on the
long threads in the discussion list which she gave us the url to yesterday :
http://listhost.uchicago.edu/pipermail/ane/2005-January/017324.html ("ane" is,
i assume, "Ancient Near East")-- as i am curious about it.
you want to read some "appalling" and heated posts, MG, work your way through
those threads, spread out over two months.
i have to confess that i'm at a loss to see what the source of the Heat is
which generates so much Smoke.
something beyond simple ANE philology, i suspect, but i'm really Clueless.
U. of Chicago Ivory Tower HotHouse types, perhaps explains part of it...
>And by the way, "lieing" is not a word.
well, it's a word, but just not a real word.
in English at least.
