medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. May) is the feast day of:
The Visitation
Petronilla (d. c. 251) Petronilla was a Roman martyr. Legend and
gnostic apocrypha made her the daughter of St. Peter, and tell that
she was executed when she refused to marry.
Cantius, Cantianius, and Cantianella (d. c. 304) These siblings were
members of a noble Roman family. When Diocletian started persecuting
Christians, they freed their slaves, sold their possessions, gave
everything to the poor, and fled to Aquileia. They were captured and
beheaded.
Mechtild of Edelstetten (d. 1160) This Mechtild was a Bavarian, the
daughter of the count and countess of Andechs. They placed their
daughter in the double monastery of Diessen they had founded when
she was five. M. eventually became abbess, and at the age of 28
moved on to be abbess of Edelstetten. The bishop of Augsburg gave
her the task of reforming the convent, when she did despite the nuns'
opposition. M. was famous for miracles of healing and ecstasies.
