NHS Health & Social Care Information Centre have sent me figures for the NHS
hospital deliveries by method for seven age groups for 2003-4. The
figures, given in the attachment, are for England and I am warned that they
are rounded and provisionsl.

The statistics show that caesarians range monotonically from 13% for the
under 20 group up to 46% for the 45 or older group.
Look to me as if we shall be able to blame Gordon Brown for some part of the
increase in Caesarian rates, in spite fo the views of those who prefer
evidence from faraway places to that under their noses.
In 1996 the modal age group for births was 25-29 years. By 2003 the number
of births to this age group had fallen by 25%. The increase in births over
this period for the 35-39 age group was 40%.
The table attached shows that the Caesarian rate for the 35-39 group in
2003-2004 was 30% as compared to 21% for the 25-29 age group.
