It is a pity that the data about births by method of delivery and age
which Ray got from the Information Centre can't be directly compared
with last published data on the subject, but by lining them up, it is
clear that whatever the contribution of the rising age at childbirth,
caesarean section rates have increased within each age group since the
mid 1990s, particularly among older women. So on Ray's assumption that
Gordon Brown is responsible, no wonder he looks so tired, rushing around
the country doing all those caesareans as well as being Chancellor of
the Exchequer!
The link that Ray circulated just went to the general page for community
statistics, including the maternity bulletin published on March 31 and
now available on paper. I couldn't see any additional analyses by age
there.
