Grass Roots/Engage Scotland Joint Seminar
MUSEUMS, GALLERIES AND ARTISTS:
THE MAKER IN EDUCATION
Monday 10 October at Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, Dundee, 10.00 – 17.00
This day long seminar will bring gallery and museum education staff together
to explore good practice in working with artists. Identifying the reasons
why we want to work with artists, we will examine practical issues and
discuss different approaches.
This seminar offers a valuable opportunity for professional development and
networking within the galleries and museums education sector. With case
studies and practical presentations, delegates will hear from artists,
project leaders and education staff. Highlighting good practice in
employing artists, the Scottish Artists Union and a-n, the artists’
information company will offer guidance on contacting artists and
recommended rates of pay. Contributors will encourage delegates to examine
what it is that artists bring to education work and what working in
collaboration means. Case studies from artists and educators will explore
different ways of working in a range of contexts.
Speakers will include;
Chris Kelly, Scottish Artists Union
Colin Mac Conachie, Head of Education, National Trust for Scotland
Elaine Allison and Patricia Bray, Artists
Sarah Derrick, Head of Education, Dundee Contemporary Arts
During lunchtime delegates will be given a private view of the DCA’s new
exhibition by Belgian artist, David Claerbout, who works with photography,
video and digital technology to create works which experiment with concepts
of time.
Lunch will be provided and delegates are invited to a drink reception
following the seminar.
This seminar is a collaboration between Grassroots – the Group for Education
in Museums and Scottish Museums Council project – and engage Scotland.
The cost including a light lunch is £15 for GEM and engage members and £25
for non-members.
