GEM LONDON TRAINING DAY
Venue: The Royal Armouries Museum
Date: Monday 9 May 2005
Time: 10.30am-4.30pm
Cost: £10 Gem member, £25 non-members (includes sandwich lunch)
Transport: Tower Hill tube, Liverpool Street and London Bridge rail 15 mins walk
Do you want to develop your schools or public programme? How about looking at what you can offer schools through fresh eyes? This day will encourage you to 'think beyond the box' and challenge you to develop a fresh appreciation of your collection's potential. It is designed specifically for non-specialists. Find out more about the Science curriculum and what your institution could offer schools. Learn how to interpret your collection on a shoestring budget! Discover ways that storytelling and artefact handling can bring your collection alive.
Jenny Hastings, an experienced museum educator, will run a hands-on workshop exploring ideas appropriate to small museums with limited resources. She will demonstrate ways of working with objects to illuminate the lives of the people who used them, and suggest how you can use your collection to create interactive storytelling sessions, which support the National Curriculum requirements for Literacy.
Mandy Martin-Smith will demystify Science and highlight parts of the curriculum which have both easily taught concepts and are most attractive for a school science visit. Delegates will have opportunity to discuss their collection and receive advice on how to market it to KS2 and 3 schools.
* Case study Thinking outside the box. Developing Science provision at the Tower of London
* Workshop: Scared of Science? Discovering the potential within your collection and attracting an audience!
* Workshop: Interpreting your collection on a shoestring budget
