Hi Kirsty, there seemed to be a bit of interest in this one so am ccing it
listwards.
Dice-based board games are cheap and fun to make and take, providing you
come up with the basic base board layout for the children in advance. This
should have framed spaces for the game title and relevant pictures. Allow
them to work out their own play pieces and theme (eg food chains, survival
of the fittest, from the egg to the sky etc etc) with a clear beginning and
end. Half the "stops" on the board need to be positive (e.g. daddy bird
brings home a big fat worm) and move the player forward, half the opposite
(e.g. Bill Oddie moves in with a BBC camera crew).
If writing on the board itself proves too difficult, use colour coded stops
and have a pile of positive and negative chance cards where the info can be
written instead, plus how many places forward or back the play pieces need
to move. Younger children who can't follow the basic game rules can just
cut out and/or decorate the play pieces. Cork slices with a notch cut in
them make good bases and will basically cost you some drawing and
photocopying time - and you might need to drink some wine to get enough
corks!
It's worked well for me in the past in several guises. Have fun.

Subject: Animal Themed Family Activities
Hello,
Wondering if anyone has any good ideas for craft activities to do with
families (children aged 5-11) on the theme of animals. We already make
masks and also did finger puppets last year but want to try something new
this summer. Any ideas (however wacky!) would be greatly appreciated! The
cheaper the better too!
Thank you
Regards
Kirsty
