medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Pat,
At risk of sounding like a recent Important Person, I'll jump into this discussion of who wrote what with this observation: it depends on what the meaning of "write" is.
Here are the various meanings of the term as I recall seeing them in a book I read (sorry, that's as specific as I can be), and the definitions become more applicable the farther back in time we go:
1) Put pen to paper (or stylus to parchment, scratch something in clay - you get my drift);
2) Dictate precise text to a secretary (or a reasonable facsimile thereof);
3) Tell scribe, "Write a letter to so-and-so expressing my [fill in the blanks];
4) Write or dictate or relate over and over again what so-and-so said and then call it so-and-so's sayings; when sayings get written down, so-and-so's writings;
5) Take notes at a lecture and then pass them off (not necessarily pejorative connotation here) as so-and-so's words.
Hope this helps.
RE: Book of Rev, the name of the person or persons who first wrote those words on some sort of medium will, I believe, never be known to us. But, then, what difference does the name of the author[s] make? I've enjoyed skimming this brou-ha-ha, but frankly, my dear...
All best,
MG

Please, who did write it, then? Or was it a committee?
Pat
