medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Right you are, Jim. Schapiro and Kupfer are two notable exceptions to my own too broad "condemnation" of art historians. My jaundiced view is perhaps due to my disappointment upon reading a book ostensibly about medieval masons and sculptors and finding instead a lengthy discussion of chisel marks on earlobes.
Happy New Year,

With all due respect, Marjorie, that depends on the art historian! Style analysis and
close reading of Romanesque works are methodological necessities, given the
virtual absence of written documentation; few art historians these days would be
content, however, to leave their analyses there. The problem is that, by its nature,
art history is multidisciplinary: acquaintance with theology, inter multi alia, is
necessary to do good medieval art history.
This is not an area I know extremely well, but if I wanted a theological
perspective on this question, I'd probably first turn to Yves Christe, _Les grands
portails romans: Etudes sur l'iconographie des theophanes romanes_ (Geneval,
1969).
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
