medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Bob asks a fine question, much of which I can't answer, but I can
make this much clear: there are very few "id est" glosses or paraphrases
in BA--about 1 every 10 pages--and this seems to be original to the text,
for I've looked at 5 different MSS of fairly early date (c. 1300, give or
take a decade or two) and they all give the same readings, just one having
its <.i.> almost tall enough to be my hypothesized <.l.>. In this general
area two manuscripts are clearly related, but the rest are spread widely
apart. One has also been corrected from another copy (or more), but I
can't pin it down among the others, at least not yet.
That does not mean all are perfect, for there do seem to be errors
in the archetype behind them all, and I'm certain BA never finished the
work, though he apparently completed it--lots of loose ends never got tied
up, including internal cross-references.
