medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. August) is the feast day of:
Euplius (d. 304) Euplius was a Catanian deacon. During the great persecution, a copy of the gospels was found in his possession. E. refused to disavow Christianity, so was beheaded.
Murtagh (6th cent.) Murtagh (or Muredach) was an Irishman of royal blood. He seems to have been first bishop of Killala, although it is very unlikely he was appointed by St. Patrick. M. apparently ended his life as a hermit on Inismurray.
Porcarius and companions (d. c. 732) Porcarius was abbot of Lerins. He had a vision that his monastery was about to be attacked by Muslim pirates, so he sent the younger members of the community to safety on the mainland in the only available boat. P. himself and the rest of the monks were slaughtered by the pirates who did indeed turn up, except for four who were enslaved.
A modern saint (or at least blessed): Innocent XI (d. 1689). Benedetto Odescalchi became pope in 1676 with the name Innocent XI. He encouraged seminary education, but was most noted both before and during his pontificate for his simple, pious life.
